J.L. Pierson, ASA has received an MBA from Columbia University; he also holds a Dipl. Ing. Comm. from Universite de Nancy, France and has taken many business valuation and corporate credit-related courses over the years.

J.L. Pierson is an ASA designated by the American Society of Appraisers in the Business Valuation discipline. He has successfully completed the requirements of the following ASA courses: Ethics, Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice -USPAP and BV-201, BV-202, BV-203 and BV-204. He also submitted demonstration appraisal reports which have been deemed satisfactory by the ASA Board of Examiners and has fulfilled the length of experience requirements. The ASA is the only multi-discipline professional appraisal organization, offering courses for business valuation, personal property, real estate and machinery and equipment appraisers. Continuing education for J.L. takes many forms. For the past 11 years, J.L. has attended all annual Advanced Business Valuation conferences organized each May by the New York City chapter of ASA. In November of 1999, J.L. attended a Continuing Legal Education seminar organized by the Connecticut Bar Association on Estate Planning. In June, 2000 he attended a seminar on ESOPs organized by the National Center for Employee Ownership. In November, 2000 J.L. attended a seminar, organized by the Milwaukee, WI Chapter of ASA, on Valuation Discounts for Family Limited Partnerships and Family Limited Liability Companies. In May of 2001 J.L. attended the Planners Day Conference organized by the Estate Planning Council of New York City, Inc. and in October, 2001 a CAVS seminar on the valuation of FLPs in Chicago. In July, 2004 he attended the CAVS Cost of Capital seminar in Kansas City, MO taught by Roger J. Grabowski, ASA. In 2006, he attended another CAVS seminar on valuation for financial reporting, and in 2007 a seminar on divorce in New York chaired by judge.

J.L. served the profession as a director of the ASA's Connecticut Chapter. He is a member of the Estate Planning Council of New York City, Inc. and a non-lawyer member of the Fairfield County Bar Association, Inc. He is a frequent speaker to business, appraisal and other groups about business valuation topics. He has published several articles in publications for the legal and estate planning communities.
